Preveza

We motored all of the way from Gaios as there was very little wind. Approaching Preveza on the mainland there is a very narrow dredged channel marked by some very rusty supposedly red and green buoys, but they are quite difficult to see until you are almost upon them. Outside the marked channel the water is very shallow (less than the depth of our keel!) so it was quite important that we found the buoys – luckily it was a clear day.

We found a great mooring on the Town Quay with water and a very dodgy looking electric box which we decided not to risk!

Preveza is a lively, busy town with a great atmosphere. The bars on the town quay played music until well past 2 am but at least it was our type of music!

There is a so called ‘marina’ here but it has clearly been payed for by EU money and hasn’t been finished. There is no one to manage it and it is a real free for all with boats moored here from all over the world! We met a couple who leave their boat here all year round under the guardiannage of a local Greek who seems to have commandeered a few moorings! His office and workshop is a caravan on the dock!

Helen decided it was time to do some laundry!

From here we decided to visit Nikopolis, Roman city ruins which was allegedly 3 km outside of town. A taxi wanted 15 Euros so we decided to break out the bikes and give our legs a bit of a work out. 3 km turned out to be more like 10 km, but it was a fairly easy ride, with not too many hills.

IMG_8274The ruins of Nikopolis were impressive, spread over a huge area so we were glad that we had the bikes to see a bit more of the site.

By the time we got back to the boat temperatures were tipping 30 degrees so we were a bit hot and sweaty, and our legs certainly knew that they had done some work! After our exertions we didn’t have the energy for much more, except picking up the laundry from the local Yacht Services and making our way along the quay to the local ice cream shop! We were joined by three elderly Greeks who were tucking into enormous cakes – Helen politely asked them what they were and they insisted on each giving us a bit of theirs! Priceless!

We had another night in Preveza, shopped for supplies in the local Greek district before moving on.

Greetings from Martin and Jackie (Poppiento III - the ketch moored next to you in Preveza). Pleased to hear you enjoyed your tour of the Ionian. Nikopolis looks worth a visit, we've never been.

Hope you are enjoying Poros and have a great time with the rest of your trip.
