We left early in the morning and motored the 10 miles to the mouth of the Corinth Canal. Justin called the control centre on the VHF just as we were approaching the entrance. We had just missed a slot to get through from this side, so had to wait at the entrance for an hour and a half whilst traffic from the other side was allowed through. We motored up and down for a while and were eventually called up by the control and asked to follow a large cargo vessel through the canal. He was under tow so it was all very exciting!
We followed the cargo ship and ‘Dreamtime’ through the small entrance and past the road bridge which was closed for our passage.
The canal is only three miles long but is truly spectacular -
When we eventually got to the other side we moored up next to the control office and Helen went ashore to do the paperwork and pay the transit bill – a mere 239 Euros! Oh well, an incredible experience and it really did save us going all of the way around the Peloponnese.
We left our Austrian friends and motored out into the Aegean sea for the very first time. Amazing!….
