Final push to Turkey

Finally got around to updating the Blog!

The weather eventually settled and we decided to leave Nisyros head for the Island of Symi.

A beautiful sail arriving mid afternoon in the port of Symi.

We managed to get a good mooring although there was quite a swell from the ferries -luckily they stopped coming and going at a reasonable time! Managed to cope without electricity and water as it was very expensive – 10 euros per night!

Symi is a lovely town but many of the properties are in a very poor state of repair.

We stayed for a couple of days and then checked out of Greece to make our way directly to Marmaris in Turkey. The weather was due to turn so we decided to get installed at the new marina asap. Helen did all of the paperwork, involving a lot of footwork going backwards and forwards to various departments in Symi.

Anyway we managed to fuel up (diesel is a lot cheaper in Greece than in Turkey) and set off late morning. We had a great sail most of the way but the wind died as we approached Marmaris Bay. There was a regatta taking place in Marmaris so we hoped that we were going to be able to get a mooring – we were two or three days early for our contract. No problem though – we managed to get a decent mooring near the centre of the marina, in a sheltered spot. As we approached the marina entrance we were joined by two dolphins who had clearly come out to welcome us personally to Turkey – a great sign!

Hi Justin and Helen (or Mr and Mrs B is you prefer!)
Maddie was playing her recorder this evening and suddenly said "I wonder what Mr Backhouse is doing? He used to sing this song . . . he wasn't very good but he seemed to enjoy it!" . . . sorry but out of the mouthes of babes . . !
Well - lets look and see what they are up to! I suggest and it looks blissful!!! Fantastic to read all of the notes on your travels and the photos make me quite envious.
I hope is it as amazing a journey as it seems - the stuff dreams are made of!
And what are we doing . . . well, it is a wet Friday night in the UK - Miles in on a sleepover at Alfies and we are all looking forward to half term! I am at least enjoying a chilled glass of white "from the deep" - but the UK seems somewhat pedestrian compared to your own situation. Hope you are having as much fun as it seems! Warmest wishes Catherine (Richardson)

PS Big debate has just ensued - is it Mr B or Cap'n Jack Sparrow in the only photo of a man . . . Maddie wants more pics of Mr B!!! Where is he? She asks and she also says that Mrs B does not look anything like "Matron" as she is too brown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a shame!
More pics!!! please! hey it is much better than the TV we are suffering here!

PPS I have probably had too much wine now - but maybe Helen has traded Justin in for a younger bearded model along the way . . . .
