We needed to do a ‘Visa Run’ in January – the visa is only valid for 90 days and so you need to leave the country and then return to renew it. Most yachties take the day ferry across to Rhodes from Marmaris but we decided to go with a few friends aboard ‘Stormvogel’ for a few days and make a Birthday trip of it.
Although there wasn’t much wind on the way over, it was a beautiful day and we did manage to sail all of the way. We moored in Mandraki Harbour and enjoyed a chilli supper, although various members of the crew were dropping with the dreaded Man Flu!
The following day we hired a car and seven of us travelled along the coast to the small town of Lindos. What a beautiful spot, although it was very quiet we managed to find a small restaurant open for lunch. The castle on the hill was open but they wanted a lot of money to have a look around although Justin did try to do a deal saying that we were a school party!
On our return we dropped in to Lidl to check out the cheap booze. We bought 4 different cans of beer and returned to the boat for a taste test before stocking up.
The following day was Justin’s Birthday – after present giving on the aft deck the crew spent the day shopping and sight seeing in the Old Town. In the evening we all went to a restaurant in the Old Town for a Birthday meal. A great end to a brilliant day.
After checking in and out of Greece, with visas renewed, we left Mandraki for a brilliant sail over to Marmaris. 11.5 knots most of the way with a following sea. A great way to end a fantastic trip!
