Naxos

Another day, another Greek island; oh what a chore!

Naxos has much more of a real Geek town feel to it, and therefore has we liked it much more. The entrance to the harbour is overlooked by a marble arch which was built about 2500 years ago as the entrance of a temple of Apollo, but was never finished ( a bit like the marinas in modern day Greece!) It’s a really impressive landmark to welcome visiting boats to Naxos, and we had a lovely walk to see it up close, before we went of to explore the narrow streets of the pretty town. We had noticed that there was a better quality of feral cats on Naxos, and as we walked around the town we noticed that many of the houses had collecting boxes tied to their fences to raise money to feed them. If I come back as a cat I want to live on Naxos!

We had a great mooring on a pontoon for visitors which was still quite crowded despite being late in the season. In the morning a mini diesel tanker called to the pontoon so we took the opportunity to fill up at reasonable prices. There was an elderly gentleman who called himself port security with a homemade badge who walked around the boats taking note of the names and asking for money. We were a bit suspicious that he was a self appointed official just trying to supplement his pension, but he was very helpful, pointing out the cheapest supermarkets etc, and we had 2 nights with power and water for 14Euros, so we didn’t feel ripped off. Who knows whether the money went into his pocket or the Greek economy!
